Historic preservation is making headlines in Florida. Here’s a roundup of news items to watch, and updates on stories we’ve been following:
Hurricane News
- Communities were heavily impacted by Hurricane Helen in Florida and beyond. Our Hurricane Response Committee is ready and will get out to affected parts of the state as soon as it is safe to do so to check in on historic resources. Stay tuned for more information and let us know if a historic resource area has been affected.
Florida Trust News
- As part of its Summer Appeal, the Florida Trust has launched a new way of giving: monthly donations.
11 to Save
- Applications for the 2024 11 to Save Grant Fund are now open! The 11 to Save Grant Fund supports resources that have been listed on the 11 to Save.
- Once threatened with demolition and development, Warm Mineral Springs’ mid-century modern resources, listed on the 2024 Florida’s 11 to Save, will instead be rehabilitated.
- John A. Gibson School, one of the 2024 Florida’s 11 to Save, has been sold to the City of Pensacola, staving off threats of demolition.

- The National Trust for Historic Preservation’s PastForward 2024 conference will take place in New Orleans, October 28-30.
- The National Park Service releases a series of lessons exploring the role of Pensacola as an American World Word II Heritage City.
- A spooky season webinar series by Tallahassee Trust for Historic Preservation explores Tallahassee’s spookiest historic places.
- A series of webinars by 1000 Friends of Florida explores planning, development and growth issues facing the state.

- The 48th Annual Art Deco Weekend, which will take place January 18-20, 2025, has released a call for speakers.

- October 8: U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón will visit the Everglades as part of the You Are Here: Poetry in Parks project.
- October 14-18: The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum is celebrating the lighthouse’s 150th birthday.
- October 30: Preservationists will share their scariest horror stories during Preservation and Pints in Jacksonville. Organized by the Florida Public Archaeology Network and the Florida Trust.
