Historic preservation is making headlines in Florida. Here’s a roundup of new items to watch, and updates on stories we’ve been following:
- Insider’s Tour: Tampa: Bring a friend and get 30% off! Registration is open! Sign up and join us in this behind-the-scenes tour to explore the history, architecture, culture and cuisine of Tampa and Ybor City.
- Save the date! 2024 Preservation on Main Street will take place July 10-13, 2024 in Tallahassee, FL. Tallahassee will also be celebrating 200 years as Florida’s capital next year!
- 2023 Preservation on Main Street was a success! You can download presentation slides and request certificates of participation here. AIA and APA credits have been reported to each organization respectively.
- The Florida Trust is celebrating its 45th birthday this year! Stay tuned for more information on the organization’s history – meanwhile, check out these collectible t-shirts, pins and stickers that just launched!
- 11 to Save: Mt. Olive A.M.E., one of 2023 Florida’s 11 to Save, has been designated a local landmark by Jacksonville’s City Council.
- Preservation Win: In more Jacksonville news, the historic Eastside neighborhood was listed on the National Register. Congratulations!
- Preservation Win: As we mentioned in June, Green Gables, twice listed in Florida’s 11 to Save, now belongs to Green Gables at Historic Riverview Village Inc., the nonprofit that has advocated for its preservation for over a decade. A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on August 31, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Don’t miss it!
- Conference: The Conference on Public Archaeology’s preliminary program is now posted! As a reminder, the event will be held on September 22-23, 2023, in Pensacola.
- Call for proposals: The National Alliance for Preservation Commissions is seeking proposals for educational sessions, panels and round tables from individuals contributing to the field of historic preservation (or related fields) at the local, state, and national levels to be offered at FORUM 2024: Preservation Under the Palms.
- Grants: Daughters of the American Revolution has allotted $250,000 in funding for the 2024-2025 Historic Preservation Grants to support local historic preservation, and is now accepting submissions until October 31, 2023.
- Webinar: It’s time for the 2023-2024 Dr. John M. DeGrove webinars! Offered for free by 1000 Friends of Florida, the webinars also qualify for professional certification credits for planners, Florida landscape architects and Florida attorneys.
- Podcast: Listen to Ben Franklin’s World, Episode 358: Charles Tingley, St. Augustine and Early Florida, “to explore the early American history of La Florida through the lens of one of its capitals: the city of St. Augustine.”
- Must-read: Don’t miss Florida Planning Magazine‘s wake-up call article, “Florida’s Rising Seas: Mapping Florida’s Future,” by 1000 Friends of Florida Communications Director Vivian Young, AICP.
- Threatened: Preservationist Bonnie Bolton from Coral Gables is fighting to save the Garden of Our Lord from the threat of development.
