Florida Preservation News: November 2023

Historic preservation is making headlines in Florida. Here’s a roundup of new items to watch, and updates on stories we’ve been following:

11 to Save Grant Fund: Mt. Olive AME, one of Florida’s 2023 11 to Save, is awarded $5,000 for emergency roof repairs. To support the 11 to Save Grant Fund, please consider making a donation.

Preservation Toolkit: The Florida Trust for Historic Preservation is hosting two Preservation 101 workshops in Tallahassee and Jacksonville.

Save the date! 2024 Preservation on Main Street will take place July 10-13, 2024 in Tallahassee, FL. Tallahassee will also be celebrating 200 years as Florida’s capital next year!

The Florida Trust is celebrating its 45th birthday this year! Don’t forget to get your commemorative Florida Trust swag!

Florida Trust Vice President Ennis Davis writes about seven cities called Harlems of the South, including LaVilla, one of Florida’s 2022 11 to Save.

Grants: Secured through advocacy efforts by the Florida Trust and other stakeholders, the Abandoned African American Cemeteries Grants program is accepting applications until November 30, 2023.

Advocacy: Florida’s 2024 Legislative Session begins early this year, on Tuesday, January 9. Prepare early by signing up to our advocacy newsletter or review the House Interim Committee Schedule and the Senate Interim Committee Schedule.
