Preserving Florida’s Heritage Through the 11 to Save Grant Fund

Florida is a land of vibrant colors and rich history, where every shade tells a story. In 2023, we embarked on a journey to explore the colors that embody the essence of Florida’s heritage. From the cheerful pinks of the Ringling Museum to the bold reds of the Riley House in Tallahassee, these colors are more than just aesthetics; they symbolize the resilience and spirit of our historic places.

But preserving these treasures demands action, commitment, and tangible support. That’s where the 11 to Save Grant Fund comes into play, making a real difference in safeguarding endangered historical resources across the state.

Mount Olive AME Church in Jacksonville

Built in 1922 by the pioneering African American builder and designer Richard L. Brown, Mount Olive AME Church stands as a symbol of hope, resilience and spiritual nourishment. It has weathered the challenges of reconstruction, segregation and the Civil Rights era. Throughout it all, this church has remained a haven for the community, a place where individuals could find solace and empowerment through education.

However, the passage of time has taken its toll on Mount Olive AME Church. Neglect and deterioration now threaten not only its structural integrity but also the tangible reminders of history it holds within its walls. The risk of losing this vital piece of Florida’s heritage is real.

“Mt. Olive AME Church congregations are overwhelmingly excited and sincerely blessed by the support the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation has provided them since being recognized as a historical site,” said Rev. Elizabeth E. Yates, the Presiding Elder of the church. “This award will help the church address an urgent need to mitigate water damage until a complete roof replacement can be done based on future funding.”

The 11 to Save Grant Fund: A Lifeline for Historic Resources

This is where the 11 to Save Grant Fund steps in, serving as a lifeline for endangered historic resources like Mount Olive AME Church. The fund is designed to provide financial assistance to safeguard these vital pieces of Florida’s history.

“Mt. Olive AME Church congregations are overwhelmingly excited and sincerely blessed by the support the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation has provided them since being recognized as a historical site,” said Rev. Elizabeth E. Yates, the Presiding Elder of the church.

In 2023, thanks to the generous contributions of individuals like you, we awarded $5,000 from the 11 to Save Grant Fund to Mount Olive AME Church. This grant will be used to fund a temporary roof, preventing water intrusion and addressing immediate threats to the building’s structural integrity.

But this is just the beginning. The 11 to Save Grant Fund is an ongoing initiative that aims to make a lasting impact on Florida’s historical treasures. It represents a commitment to preserving the stories, struggles and triumphs of our state’s diverse and vibrant history.

“This award will help the church address an urgent need to mitigate water damage until a complete roof replacement can be done based on future funding.”
