Historic preservation is making headlines in Florida. Here’s a roundup of new items to watch, and updates on stories we’ve been following:
Save the date! 2024 Preservation on Main Street will take place July 10-13, 2024 in Tallahassee, FL. Tallahassee will also be celebrating 200 years as Florida’s capital next year!

Event: St. Cloud Main Street’s Breakfast with the Pros has invited Florida Trust CEO & President Melissa Wyllie to share information on the National Register and historic district designations.
Advocacy: Florida’s 2024 Legislative Session begins early this year, on Tuesday, January 9. Early preppers can sign up to our advocacy newsletter or review the House Interim Committee Schedule and the Senate Interim Committee Schedule.
11 to Save: The Jackson Rooming House, a Florida’s 11 to Save, will be documented by the University of South Florida’s Digital Heritage and Humanities Collections. The building will undergo a complete forensic 3D structural analysis that will support future preservation efforts.
Call for proposals: The National Alliance for Preservation Commissions is seeking proposals for educational sessions, panels and round tables from individuals contributing to the field of historic preservation (or related fields) at the local, state, and national levels to be offered at FORUM 2024: Preservation Under the Palms. Proposals must be submitted by October 9.
Grants: The Villagers Restoration and Preservation Grant is accepting applications through October 15. The grant provides funds for education and/or the repair, preservation and restoration of existing historical sites.
Webinar: The next Dr. John M. De Grove webinar, The Underline: Innovative approaches to linear park planning and landscape architecture will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 12-1:30 p.m. Offered for free by 1000 Friends of Florida, the webinars also qualify for professional certification credits for planners, Florida landscape architects and Florida attorneys.
Job Board: The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) is hiring a Program Analyst and Army Liaison.
In addition to buildings and archaeological spaces, Florida’s cemeteries are increasingly threatened by climate change.
The owners of the historic Clevelander Hotel in Miami Beach plan to replace it with a 30-story affordable housing building.
